Charleston Air Force Base has been a Joint Base since 1953 and shares a number of runways with Charleston International Airport. It is home to the 437th Airlift Wing and the 528th Air Base wing. The Aircraft wing services more than 70,000 military soldiers across the Armed Force branches. On-post housing is available through the military housing office which can help identify which properties are move-in ready and which will require a wait. Temporary lodging may be necessary in nearby hotels and motels until the appropriate residence becomes available. If off-post housing is what is desired, the housing office can determine what properties are for rent or sale in the nearby communities. A basic housing allowance will be assigned based on rank that will help cover the cost of rent and utilities. Off-post accommodations can be found in the cities of Goose Creek, Summerfield, and Charleston, North Carolina.
Children living on-post will attend a school within the Charleston County School District. Elementary schools will be determined by the on-post community in which a family lives. Middles schools and high schools are also accessible to on-post residences. If there are questions about specific schools, contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center at #843-963-4406. Off-post housing residents may choose to attend Dorchester County schools or Berkeley County schools depending on location. The air base holds an air show every other year which includes displays of historic military aircraft, flight demonstrations and a premier presentation by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds or Blue Angels.
